Every Masque is a trip somewhere into the unknown, though all through the disk you do hear echoes of the yet-unborn King Crimson of the next 5 years.Even if you own the original ProjeKcts releases, I highly recommend getting this (and the other) full P3 show - because only in this fuller, looser variation will you hear them in the right, not-too-tight-not-too-loose fit for the sonic space they inhabit. Robert and Trey constantly trade salvos back and forth, but it’s not a battle per se - though it gets pretty rough on X-Chayn-Jiz and then pretty humorous on Light ConstruKction. About the same could be said for ProjeKction, which is wittier here than in most other forms I heard. Heavy ConstruKction in its full form is especially a delight - you have to hear it in this raw, uncut form to really appreciate that piece’s cleverness (whereas shorter versions of it found elsewhere always irritated me a bit). Robert, Pat and Trey deliver all the essentials and fill up the space of their own creation just right - whereas the other projects often seem to subtly under-fill it or over-fill it (with their own creative merits).This show has all the ingredients of a great gig, and I don’t think it falls flat at any moment. I would stop short of calling ProjeKct Three the best of the projects (even if it is my favorite), but I would say it’s probably the most definitive of the ProjeKctivisation format. Again, this is a fine show with the understanding that the explorations of improvisations are different than a finished, composed piece. Deception of the Thrush is consistently good listening. Projekction is a winning version, as it was the night before. Light Construkction, while not my favorite clip of the night, does sound like a clear attempt to work out something new that would be emerging as a more mature tune. I don't think every turn taken here was in the right direction, but you can surely hear the band searching for something, which is itself interesting. Masque 8 and 11 start out as more "soundscapy", with the latter having some base thumps that are reminiscent of Industry. The last two tunes of the first set are both winners, though Heavy Construkction is less of a Dance Club Romp than it was the night before. ![]() X chayn Jiz is exciting, but went a bit off the rails to my ear. Masque 3 starts out with loops and soundscapes before flowing into soaring guitar exchanges over various textures. This is a solid show, and P3 are a solid outfit. ![]()
